Review: Oblivion and repetition...

We went over the mountains to Durango a few  weekends ago and saw an "after Armageddon" movie...Happy Mother's Day!!

OBLIVION, starring Tom Cruise as a  "tech guy" go-fer doing some mop up, on what is left of the planet, is actually a pretty good movie, with lots of twists, turns and surprises....
They did the "destruction"" and "abandonment" of the planet,  a little bit different then other Armageddon movies such as Mad Max...
(no desert landscape)
or Waterworld...
( it's not all under the deep blue sea)

You ever wonder how places like Pompeii got buried and went unnoticed for hundreds of years...
well after an alien war, the world was pretty much left to collect dust, even the Empire State Building started to be covered in dirt and green grass...
But it was a quiet little paradise for Jack Harper, who does the grunt work while the other half of his "effective team", Victoria, stays back at the tower and takes orders from "off planet" and keeps an eye on a huge hydro pumping operation and watches out for the "scavs", stragglers left on the planet from the alien race or not?
Jack begins to wonder, while he starts to collect souvenirs of a life from before he was born so why does he remember it.
Of course there is a girl, not Victoria, but one from his dreams...

played by Olga Kurylenko, mostly known for starring with Daniel Craig in the second Bond movie...

OBLIVION is definitely worth a watch at the theaters now or watch it when it comes out for download and DVD in a few months.
Now for the repetition..
Not that long ago, 2011, Kurylenko starred in a French movie, translated " Land of Oblivion" (2011)
about the last good day before the Chernobyl disaster. But not many people saw that

But do you know how many movies Tom Cruise is named Jack in? I do, three and I knew it before I imdb.com-ed it. ( Well, I knew there was a third one, other then OBLIVION and his previous movie...
I just do because I can hear the fair maiden running through the underworld maze, calling his name, "Jack, Jack"

That was from a long time ago, I was still in High School in 1985...
can you say "cheesy"..
My kids can when they see what was "cool" back then, though I think the movie was considered a "miss" even 1985, maybe Cruise should stick to "saviors" instead of "forest children"...
So, no more "Jack" character's for Cruise, though it is such a good name for a "hero", here are other heroes named "Jack", how many can you think of?

Of course there is "Captain Jack Sparrow...

"Jack Skellington" the Pumpkin King...

"Jack Dawson"...

And of course "Jack" the Giant Slayer....
